Most people don’t know all the signs of an unhealthy tree. While you see the trees on your property every day, you may not know exactly what to look for when determining their health. Trees don’t become unhealthy overnight. They decay and lose their health over time.

It’s important to take notice of how your tree is growing in order to maintain its health. An unhealthy tree can be potentially dangerous to your home, property, and person. If your tree is exhibiting any of the following symptoms, it may be time to call your local arborists.

Leaves

Leaves promote the health of the tree; after all, trees gather most of their nutrients through their leaves. They are also a significant indicator that something may be wrong with the tree. When a tree loses a significant amount of leaves either all over or in a particular area, that may be a sign the tree isn’t healthy. Leaves that are growing smaller than normal or are an unusual color could also be an indicator that the tree isn’t doing well.

Broken and Weak Branches

One or two broken branches aren’t bad. But if there is an excessive amount of broken branches, your tree has a problem. During the winter or even during the storm season, it can be hard to determine if a tree is healthy by looking at its branches. It’s normal for those seasons to be hard on trees. But if you feel that the tree is losing branches excessively, it’s time to have the tree inspected.

If it’s Leaning

This is a slightly obvious sign of tree health. Healthy trees should be standing straight. Leaning trees are a big indicator that the health of the tree has declined. A tree should be able to support the weight of its branches. If it’s starting to lean, it means the tree can no longer handle its own weight. An arborist will be able to make a plan to potentially save the tree.

Abnormal Fungi

Healthy trees don’t have a lot of fungi or mushrooms growing on them. Fungi is different from moss which simply uses the tree to grow on. Trees start to decay from the inside out. Fungus feeds off of dead tissue. So if you spot fungus or mushrooms on a tree, that’s a sign that the tree has already begun dying.
