Surface roots snaking across a lawn are a common sight in Jacksonville and a common source of trip hazards, mower damage, and cracked walkways. The instinct is to cut them off, but that’s often the worst thing you can do: major roots anchor the tree and feed it, and removing them can kill or destabilize it. This guide explains how roots actually grow, why they surface here, the real risks, and how to deal with them safely.
Forget the myth of a deep taproot mirroring the canopy. In reality, most of a mature tree’s roots grow in the top 12–18 inches of soil where water and oxygen are and spread outward well beyond the branch tips, often 1.5 to 3 times the radius of the canopy. Roots come in two types: large woody structural roots that anchor the tree, and fine absorbing roots that take up water and nutrients. When you see a big root at the surface, that’s a structural root doing a critical job which is exactly why cutting it is so risky.
Do not cut large roots. Removing a major structural root to tidy the lawn can starve the tree, open it to decay, and critically reduce its anchorage, making it far more likely to fail in a storm. As a rule, no more than about 20–25% of a tree’s roots should ever be cut, and never the big buttress roots near the trunk. Cutting roots on one side is a leading cause of leaning and uprooted trees. If a root truly must be cut, an arborist should assess how much the tree can lose first.
Don’t bury the roots under deep soil either. Piling several inches of fill over the root zone suffocates the fine absorbing roots and can cause rot at the base of the trunk. The root flare where the trunk widens into the roots should always stay visible.
If surface roots are lifting your foundation or driveway, if you’re tempted to cut a large root, or if the tree also shows a lean, decay, or dieback, get a professional risk assessment before acting. This is common in older, tree-lined neighborhoods like Mandarin, where mature oaks and hardscape often collide. Where a tree is genuinely damaging a structure and can’t be retained, we handle tree removal and stump grinding to eliminate the surface-root problem at the source.
Can I cut tree roots that are above the ground?
Generally no. Large roots anchor and feed the tree — cutting them can kill or destabilize it and lead to failure in a storm. Have an arborist assess before removing any significant root.
Why are my tree’s roots growing above ground?
Usually compacted or shallow sandy soil, erosion washing soil away, or a mature shallow-rooted species like a water or laurel oak. Roots grow up and out to reach oxygen and water.
What’s the safest way to cover exposed roots?
A 2–3 inch layer of mulch (kept off the trunk) or a shade-tolerant ground cover. Both protect the roots and reduce trip and mower hazards without smothering the tree.
Can surface roots damage my house or driveway?
They can lift sidewalks, driveways, and patios over time and, in some cases, affect foundations. If that’s happening, get a risk assessment before taking action.
Will removing the tree stop the root problem?
If a tree is truly damaging a structure and can’t be retained, removal plus stump grinding resolves the surface roots. It’s a last resort after safer options are ruled out.
