Excavator digging out tree roots for full stump removal

Happens all the time around here. Tree’s gone, but now you’ve got a stubborn stump and some roots still clinging to the yard like they own the place. With Jacksonville’s loose sandy soil and all the rain we get, that old wood can start shifting or sprouting before you know it. We hear from some folks the same day the tree comes down. Others want to know if they can just leave it alone. The real answer? Depends on what you plan to do with that spot.

Let’s walk through the pros and cons together, just like we would standing in your backyard.

What Root Grinding Really Means

Root grinding is pretty straightforward. We bring in a stump grinder, chip the stump down below the surface-usually 6 to 12 inches deep-and knock back the main roots if needed. Doesn’t make a mess, doesn’t tear up your lawn, and we can usually wrap it up in under a couple of hours.

It’s great if you want that spot to disappear quickly. You can lay sod or mulch right over it. Just keep in mind, that we’re not pulling anything out by the roots. Those deeper roots stay underground and slowly rot out over time. You might get a few sprouts. If that doesn’t bother you, this route usually works fine.

What Full Removal Involves

Now full removal? That’s another level. We dig out the entire root system – the stump, the main roots, everything. It’s more labor, we bring in a small excavator or backhoe, and once it’s up, you’ve got a pretty big hole to backfill.

It’s what we recommend if you’re putting in a new tree, concrete slab, or raised garden bed. Basically, anything where root rot, shifting soil, or suckering could cause a problem down the line.

Takes longer, costs more, but leaves nothing behind.

Jacksonville’s Soil and Weather Quirks

We’ve worked yards all over this area-Mandarin, Arlington, out by Jax Beach-and no two are quite the same. But most have that mix of sand and clay that drains fast, shifts in rain, and stays warm almost year-round.

  • In sandy spots, old stumps tend to sink or shift over time
  • If we get a real wet stretch in summer (and we usually do), leftover roots can rot fast and bring in fungus
  • Hurricanes and heavy wind? We’ve seen half-ground roots show up out of nowhere when the soil gets saturated

Bottom line: what’s underground doesn’t always stay put. That’s something to think about when choosing between grinding and digging.

How They Compare

Tree Root Grinding vs. Full Removal:

When Grinding Makes More Sense

Honestly, if you just want the stump out of the way and you’re not planting anything serious in that spot, grinding is usually the better fit. Especially if it’s in the backyard, covered with sod, or tucked under a tree canopy.

We do this for most residential jobs. It’s clean, it’s fast, and it doesn’t leave a crater in your yard.

When Full Removal’s the Smarter Call

But if you’re working on a landscape overhaul, laying pavers, pouring concrete, or planting something that’s going to live in that exact spot-you’ll want it fully removed. Same goes if the stump area has had termite issues, or root fungus in the past. You don’t want any of that hanging around.

We tell folks: if you’re investing in what’s going there next, take the time to clear it all out.

Expect Some Regrowth If You Grind

This part surprises people. Not every tree does it, but some sweetgum, laurel oak, even camphor-will send up shoots from the old roots.

You don’t need to panic. Most of the time you can snip them or treat them with a safe herbicide. Within a year or two, those roots usually rot away. Just don’t be caught off guard.

Don’t Skip the Backfill

Here’s something a lot of people don’t plan for: once the stump’s gone, the hole sinks. Even with grinding, the soil softens as roots decompose.

We always recommend filling the area with good, clean topsoil, packing it down well, and letting it settle for a couple weeks. Otherwise, that nice flat lawn you laid might start to look like a sinkhole come spring.

And always double check your drainage. Jacksonville yards can get swampy fast if you’re not careful.

Questions We Hear All the Time

What’s the difference between stump grinding and root grinding?

Stump grinding clears the trunk down to the ground. Root grinding goes further-into the shallow roots. It’s worth asking what’s included before hiring someone.

Will grinding affect other trees?

Not unless their roots are tangled up with the stump you’re grinding. If you’re worried, we’ll check it out before starting.

Will grinding completely stop shoots from popping up?

Not always. Some species are stubborn. If they do come up, it’s manageable. Just trim or treat as needed.

Is there a smell afterward?

Sometimes. Especially if it’s been wet out. Usually just an earthy scent. It fades fast.

Can I plant something in that spot later?

Yes, but give it some time. Dig out the chips, level the area, and mix in new soil.

Do I need to remove roots for flower beds?

Not unless you’re planting shrubs or trees. Most perennials and annuals are fine over ground roots.

How long should I wait to build after a full removal?

Give it about two weeks. That allows the soil to settle. Then tamp it, grade it, and you’re good to go.

Can I build over a ground stump?

Technically Yes, but only if you’re not doing anything heavy. If it’s a shed or deck, go with full removal.

Will pests show up if I leave roots in the ground?

It can happen if wood chips are left in damp areas. Keep the site clean and dry, and it shouldn’t be an issue.
